How to Add a Keyboard and Mouse to a MacBook
If you're spending some time at a desk with your Apple MacBook, adding an external keyboard and mouse makes it a little easier and comfortable to navigate. Setting up a keyboard and mouse is a fairly simple process; all that's needed is to know what sort of connection the two have.
Wired mice and keyboards connecting via USB simply need to be plugged in. Wireless mice and keyboards with a USB wireless dongle are nearly as simple, though some need to be paired with the dongle. Bluetooth devices are only slight trickier.
1: Determine what kind of connection your keyboard and mouse have. Newer keyboards and mice typically connect wirelessly via Bluetooth. Some wireless keyboards and mice have a USB dongle, others plug directly into the computer. The keyboard and mouse must either connect via Bluetooth or USB; there are no other inputs on the MacBook to which they may connect.
2: If your keyboard and mouse are wired, insert the USB cords into the computer. You are all set—proceed to Step 4.
3: Pair your wireless mouse and keyboard with the USB wireless dongle. They may pair automatically. Some keyboard and mouse combinations require the user to press a "Connect" button on each device to properly pair them. Refer to your wireless keyboard and mouse user guide.
4: Adjust the settings of the installed mouse and keyboard. Open "System Preferences" (via the Apple menu). Beneath the "Hardware" heading there are settings for both "Mouse" and "Keyboard" where you can adjust the tracking and scroll speed as well as set keyboard shortcuts.
5: Select the Bluetooth icon in the upper right corner of the menu bar on your MacBook. Select "Turn Bluetooth On."
6: Power on the keyboard and mouse according to their instructions.
7: Select "Set Up Bluetooth Device" from the "Bluetooth" menu. Select the keyboard from the detected Bluetooth devices and select "Continue." The computer will attempt to pair the devices.
8: Enter the passkey displayed on screen via the Bluetooth keyboard. Select "Continue," then "Quit."
9: Repeat these steps, selecting the mouse from the list of discovered Bluetooth devices.
10: Adjust the settings of each device in the respective preference panes in System Preferences (Apple menu > "System Preferences").
